DataTraveler
Updated: October 24, 2010
(The next generations have been released.
See DataTraveler G3, 100 G2 and 101 G2.)
Today we will start a series on Kingston flash drives and its trademark model, the DataTraveler. It has definitely placed its mark on the market, maybe even put it there. Now with the release of the world’s first 128GB Flash Drive as well as 256GB, Kingston has also gone into the business of rattling it.
The DataTraveler is often abbreviated as the DT, which I testify is pure coincidence. Nonetheless I feel honored and starting with today’s post, I will try to pay back some respect.
Let our journey of Kingston DataTraveler begin…

I have seen a very small error in this part. I have the DT100 (G1) and it doesn’t have a green LED like what it is stated above. But this is still the best site for flash drives. Looking Forward to more posts.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 am
Thanks for the compliment, Jasper. Sorry about the error – can you please tell us what the color of the LED is then? Thanks.
October 15th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Wow thats a lot of memory for good price. I should have looked into buying these awhile back.
October 17th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
Sorry for the late reply.
The DT100(G1) doesn’t have any light indicator.
October 18th, 2010 at 3:01 am
Thanks, Jasper. I could have sworn that one of the net reviews mentioned an LED light. Do you know if the DataTraveler 100 G2 has one? I’m working on adding that one (thanks to your comment
)
October 19th, 2010 at 5:08 am
Sorry, I don’t have the G2 of DT100
I see you’re a Flash Drive enthusiast. I think we are very similar. I used to collect different flash drives.
October 22nd, 2010 at 3:01 am
DT, sorry for my mistake earlier.
Earlier, I copied a big amount of data to my DT100 and I found out that it has a green light. Like you have written, it’s in the Kingston logo.
Sorry for that because this is my first time to send a file to my DT100. Please do note that it only lights up when there’s an activity. Like read&write.
More Power.
October 25th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
Well, thanks for the clarification. You kinda had me on my toes there.
Question is if the new DT100 has a green LED as well. I assume it does since it still has the Kingston logo. Maybe one of my readers can let me know?
October 26th, 2010 at 3:02 am
I’ll help you when I already bought one. I live in Philippines so I can’t buy the latest products on time.

The G 1 8 G DT does work in Readyboost in Win7
February 4th, 2011 at 6:38 pm
I like the DataTraveler 120 series so much I have the 4, 8 and 16GB models. A word of caution tho, I have been trying to complete the series with the purchase of the 32GB model. I have bought 3 of them off eBay and each was a counterfeit. The Chinese are producing counterfeit drives so you have to be careful. Make sure your Kingston flash drive has a laser etched serial number on the USB plug, that is how to tell if it is genuine or not.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
Hello Frisco,
thanks for the words of caution! I talk about counterfeits in my 128GB post. As for the DT 120 with colored bodies, there seems to be NO 32GB. Only the white body models as shown in this post include a 32GB capacity.
August 12th, 2011 at 3:00 am
I have an old 2GB Kingston and I love the LED. I bought a HP with no LED and I missed it so much. But Kingston doesn’t even mention the LEDs on their website. Thanks for including that information for people like me. Just ordered a 16GB G3.
September 18th, 2011 at 8:19 pm
Can someone plzzzz tell me of the dt 101 g2 has a light indicator?????
September 27th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
I have two of the 8GB G3 flash drives and they’re great. They go on sale at Buy.com regularly for around 9 bucks with free shipping, though I have heard that some of the office supply stores also sell them for about that price, too.
Amazing, when I think back on the first WIn95 computer I bought about 17 yrs ago. It was considered state-of-the-art with a HUGE memory ….. a whole GIGABYTE !! Of course after a few years I was running short of memory and had to start sticking photos on floppies … which by now naturally are dead as a doornail & the data seems to be unretrievable.
Truly amazing how much memory you can buy cheap now. I now stick all my photo files on am 8GB Data Traveler, and just update it every month or so. I also back up my other files with another Data Traveler, so the next time my computer self-destructs, Kingston will truly save my ass by saving my data.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:02 am
I have several DT101 G2 16GB sticks and some has lights in it and the latest ones not.
Very strange…..a light in the USB stick is definite appreciated….maybe saving costs ???

Hi all,
I have a Kingston datatraveler 1b USB, It is dead but i want to know how can you get the data off the dead usb, Because i need the data ASAP for school, Thanks
January 19th, 2012 at 9:24 am
I have bought 3 of them off eBay and each was a counterfeit. The Chinese are producing counterfeit drives so you have to be careful. Make sure your Kingston flash drive has a laser etched serial number on the USB plug, that is how to tell if it is genuine or not.
February 4th, 2012 at 3:10 pm
Jason, are you sure its dead? Have you tried plugging it into other computers? If its really dead then I dont know how one could retrieve the data. There may be software out there that could help with data recovery – google “flash drive data recovery”. Good luck!
April 15th, 2012 at 7:59 pm
I have DT101 G2 16GB sticks it can’t be format nor transfer files…(write protected) just ask how can unlock or format?
June 3rd, 2012 at 10:44 pm
The write protection is either manual (a small switch) or a software feature of the stick. See if you can right click on the USB drive icon and find a write protection option.

Cannot mount at android phone, help me
October 24th, 2014 at 2:25 am
I’ve bought two of the swivel DT101 drives (16 and 32) recently, and they do not have LEDs. Earlier versions definitely did. I opened up the new ones, and they both have locations on the circuit boards where an LED should go. I’m tempted to try to solder an LED in there, but it’s a very tight space and an awfully tiny surface mount LED. Also, I wonder if there was some valid technical reason for leaving out the LED. FWIW, these were all purchased from a local big box store over the years, so they’re genuine.
When it comes to mounting thumbdrives on Android phones and tablets, you may have to obtain a special “OTG” (On The Go) cable. Also, some Android things have to be rooted to support OTG, and/or you may need a powered hub (or split the cable and feed in power some other way) because some devices don’t supply power to the OTG cable.

Is Kingston DataTraveler 101 G2 32GB pen drive has a LED indicator?
April 5th, 2017 at 7:01 pm
I have three gen 1 which are 128mb, white with green writing. Anyone got a use for them? Used when working on a roll-out for national travel agents. Just thought, maybe able to use them to take control of computer and then run a virus/malware check rather than through Windows.
